I love the phrase “Earnest desire” vice “burning desire.”

I read the “burning desire” phrase in Think and Grow Rich in the early 80’s. I’ve struggled with the idea of a burning desire for more than 35 years.

I didn’t know or understand how I would know if I had the required “burning desire” while I traveled the path towards a goal.

Admittedly, I bounced from one incomplete goal to another, like a mishit golfball aimlessly bouncing on a cart path and finally stopping in the rough or a hazard. My trademark was one goal after another abandoned, wandering aimlessly until it returned back to me as an unfulfilled wish.

I abandoned my goals because I really felt I should feel a certain way. I should burn. No burn, no real goal. No real desire to do what’s necessary to “get ‘er done.”

Then like a rescue team, the phrase “earnest desire” pulled me out a deep pit. “Earnest desire” makes absolute sense to me. A logical, unemotional phrase I can use to test a wish and promote it to goal status.  I can easily determined if the desire for a particular experience is earnest or not.

One simple word has me believing in achieving what some consider the impossible.

One simple word has me gitty like a child hearing the ice cream truck approaching. Earnest desire is the simple phrase that has honestly changed my perspective on what I can achieve.

One word. One thought. One experience. One person. One phrase can open up a world of I’m possible.
